Sancho Panza Non Plus. Vitola de Galera: Marevas. Length: 129 mm (5⅛″). Cepo: 42 (16 67 mm).
Standard production (discontinued in 2019).

The Sancho Panza Non Plus traces its origins to a period well before the Cuban Revolution. Unfortunately, as part of a rationalisation of its portfolio, Habanos S.A. discontinued production of the Non Plus in 2019. However, owing partly to its limited distribution in global markets and partly to its niche status, it can still be found in many well-stocked tobacconists. In the case of this particular cigar, it was a fortunate discovery in a secluded cigar shop in Seville, Spain, during my visit in February this year. The cigars were from a 2020 box, which confirms that production continued for some time after the official discontinuation.

The cigars are presented in an elegant box of 25. The wrapper typically boasts rich colorado maduro to maduro hues, with a rustic appearance and minimal visible veins. While Marevas are known for occasional issues with the draw, this particular stick performs flawlessly, perhaps owing to its slightly looser packing.

On the cold draw, one is immediately greeted by pronounced woody aromas, accompanied by subtle spicy undertones and hints of earth and cocoa. Once lit, the smoke reveals a savoury profile, dominated by notes of wood and black pepper, underpinned by spiced accents. The strength is moderate. The second third continues this savoury character, enhanced by delicate bitter nuances that add complexity without overwhelming the experience. A slight astringency is also felt. At this stage, robust notes of earth and nuts come to the fore, while the woodiness becomes more subdued. The strength progresses to medium-full. In the final third, the earthy and woody notes persist, with the introduction of a faint metallic undertone. The strength remains consistent.

In essence, the Sancho Panza Non Plus remains true to the brand’s rustic heritage. The smoke is bold and assertive, with clearly defined flavours. While the evolution of the cigar is subtle, it is perceptible, though the astringency in the final stages can be slightly distracting

A really lovely cigar, rich in flavour and with a thick dense smoke. Slow burning from the outset, this imparted tones of salt and chocolate, combining to develop a very unique flavour that can only be Sancho Panza. A good draw and a burn that required only one touch up.

I am a big fan of this insider's smoke, lovely for day time. Unpretentious and great value.
