This was a generous treat from a good friend

1989 Saint Luis Rey Prominentes

This isn't the 2001 reissue of the DC, although the vitola of both cigars is exactly the same, and they were discontinued in 1998 and 2013, respectively.

The first Prominente was released in 1988 without a brand name or a band. It was possibly produced based on commission from importers. Hence, it was named Prominente based on its vitola. Until the late '80s, there were plans to include it as a regular release, under the name Saint Luis Rey Double Coronas. But unfortunately, due to economic crisis caused by Cold War, the making of this vitola was prioritised for more "prominent"😏 brands (such as Hoyo, Partagas, Punch, and Ramon), so it wasn't until 2001 that the second Prominente was reintroduced as Double Coronas. However, it was ultimately discontinued in 2013.

According to AJ, this cigar's blend changed in the '90s, and with limited production, I am fortunate to have the opportunity to try the original Vintage Prominentes.

This time, we had the pleasure of smoking this legendary cigar with Ajay's company over a glass of 30th-anniversary Ron Zacapa rum and luxury chocolate.

Saint Luis Rey is a Cuban cigar brand officially registered in 1940. At that time, Saint Luis Rey was exclusively made for the British market, with N.R. Silverstone Cigar Ltd. handling all imports. This continued until 1993 when the Cuban tobacco company Cubataco (now Habanos S.A) transferredthe UK distribution rights to Hunters and Frankau and decided not to limit the brand to the UK market. Finally, in 1994, it was imported to Hong Kong through PCC, the brand quickly become favourites amongst cigar aficionados in the Asia-Pacific region and around the world.

Although Saint Luis Rey currently only has one regular release, it has previously produced ten different vitolas. Among the discontinued styles, these two, Prominente and Double Coronas, are named one of the most legendary cigars.

Back to the cigar itself, it has a medium smoke output. My friend mentioned dark roasted nuts, but I only started to taste them after the halfway point. The cigar overall carries a delightful floral and earthy aroma. It's incredibly smooth from start to finish. The pair with good rum gave an explosion of flavours on the retrohale. It was an incredible smoking experience.
