Late 2023, at a splendid event hosted jointly by Habanos S.A and Phoenicia T.A.A. Cyprus Ltd. in Limassol, Cyprus, three fabulous new cigars were released on debut.
The Por Larrañaga Fénix Edición Regional Phoenicia is a 7 1/4 x 50 Churchill extra vitola featuring a unique cap that tapers like a belicoso but ends with a rounded top (much like a standard parejo shape). Known as a 109, this new 'Edición Regional' cigar was especially created to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the partnership between Habanos S.A. and Phoenicia T.A.A. Cyprus Ltd. (Est. 1999), a renowned distributor of Cuban cigars in Cyprus as well as approximately 60 other countries throughout much of the Middle East, Africa and Europe. Each year, within the Edición Regional program, distributors are invited by Habanos S.A. to commission a cigar for their own region, and the Por Larrañaga Fénix Edición Regional Phoenicia is strictly limited to 6,666 individually numbered boxes of 15 (totalling 99,990 cigars in all). These boxes of 15 retail at €660 (c.$705), working out at €44 (c.$47) per cigar.
Also released at this exciting event was the 'El Rey del Mundo Royal Series', a 6 1/8 x 50 vitola known as Dobles, and priced at €33 (c.$35) each, or €660 (c.$700) for a 20-count box. The El Rey del Mundo Royal Series is exclusive to the independently owned La Casa del Habano stores around the world. All of these are licensed franchises from Habanos S.A., and La Casa del Habano stores are required to meet certain qualifications regarding the type of humidor and lounge featured in-store. It is perhaps also worth noting that La Casa del Habano are frequently given priority for first shipments of new cigars.
In addition to these two important releases, Habanos S.A. debuted the Cohiba Wide Short, a 3 9/10 x 31.5 cigarillo packaged in six-count cardboard boxes. Not unlike the smaller Cohiba Short - released in 2016 and measuring 3 1/4 x 26 - the Cohiba Wide Short is a machine-made cigar. Scheduled to be available for sale from mid-January, the cigar will probably retail for around twice the price of the original Cohiba Short.
